Ayush Shetty saw his dream run at the Badminton Asia Championships 2026 end in heartbreak as he went down to China’s Shi Yuqi in the men’s singles final in Ningbo on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Indian, who had been in sensational form throughout the week, was outplayed in straight games, losing 8-21, 10-21 in just 42 minutes to the world No. 2. Yuqi, backed by home support, controlled the match from start to finish, extending his head-to-head record against Ayush to 3-0 and clinching his maiden gold medal at the continental event after three previous bronze finishes.
Despite the one-sided final, the tournament marked a significant milestone in Ayush’s young career. Ranked world No. 25, he became only the seventh Indian to win a men’s singles medal at the prestigious championship, joining an elite list that includes Dinesh Khanna, Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand.
Ayush’s journey to the final had been nothing short of remarkable. In the semifinals, he stunned reigning world No. 1 Kunlavut Vitidsarn in a thrilling three-game battle, coming back from a game down to win 10-21, 21-19, 21-17. Earlier in the tournament, the youngster also defeated top contenders including world No. 4 Jonatan Christie, world No. 20 Chi Yu Jen, and China’s world No. 7 Li Shi Feng.
