Indian badminton sensation Tanvi Sharma continued her impressive run at the Denmark Open 2026, securing a place in the women’s singles quarterfinals with a straight-game victory over Germany’s Yvonne Li on Thursday.
The 17-year-old produced a composed performance to defeat Li 21-17, 21-19 in the Round of 16, setting up a highly anticipated encounter against world No. 1 An Se Young.
The upcoming quarterfinal will mark Tanvi’s first career meeting with the South Korean star, presenting one of the biggest challenges of her young badminton career.
Tanvi entered Thursday’s contest after a demanding opening-round battle against Japan’s Natsuki Nidaira, which lasted 72 minutes. However, the Indian youngster showed no signs of fatigue against Li, completing the match in just 39 minutes.
The opening game saw Tanvi establish control early, using her attacking approach and consistent shot-making to keep her opponent under pressure.
Li struggled to gain momentum as Tanvi maintained her advantage throughout the game before eventually sealing it 21-17.
The second game proved considerably more competitive, with both players exchanging leads in a closely fought contest.
Li raised her intensity and challenged Tanvi across several rallies, making it difficult for the Indian to establish a comfortable advantage.
With the scores level at 16-16, Tanvi delivered a decisive burst of four consecutive points to move ahead 20-16 and earn four match points.
Although Li fought back strongly to narrow the deficit to 20-19, Tanvi remained calm under pressure and converted her final opportunity to complete the straight-game victory.
The result underlined the youngster’s ability to handle crucial moments against experienced opposition, particularly after navigating a demanding second game.
Her next opponent, An Se Young, represents a significant step up in competition. Facing the world’s top-ranked player will provide Tanvi with an opportunity to test her skills against the highest level of women’s singles badminton.
Meanwhile, India’s challenge at the Denmark Open will also continue in the women’s doubles category.
The Indian combination of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela is scheduled to face Malaysia’s second-seeded pair Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan.
The encounter promises another difficult test for the Indian contingent as it looks to progress further in the tournament.
With Tanvi preparing for her maiden showdown against An Se Young and the women’s doubles pair facing formidable opponents, India’s campaign at the Denmark Open enters a crucial stage.
