The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced its World Tour calendar for 2027 and 2028, confirming that the India Open Super 750 will be held in February in 2027 before returning to a late-January slot the following year.
The country’s premier badminton tournament, which was staged from January 13 to 18 in 2026 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, will now take place from February 2 to 7 in 2027 and from January 25 to 30 in 2028.
The scheduling change follows criticism surrounding the 2026 edition, where several leading international players raised concerns over hazardous air quality, freezing indoor court temperatures and hygiene standards at the venue.
Meanwhile, the Syed Modi India International, which has been downgraded to a Super 100 event, will be held in Lucknow from July 27 to August 1 in 2027 and from July 25 to 30 in 2028.
The BWF’s newly released calendar features a 35-tournament global circuit for both 2027 and 2028, ranging from Super 100 to Super 1000 events, along with the season-ending World Tour Finals. The season will run from January through December.
At the highest level, the tour will include five Super 1000 tournaments across Asia and Europe. Each event will be played over 11 days across two weekends and will feature a revamped competition format consisting of a 48-player singles draw with a group stage followed by knockout rounds, alongside a 32-pair doubles knockout draw. The BWF also confirmed that all 1,095 matches from the Super 1000 events will be broadcast globally.
BWF president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul said the revised calendar has been designed with players’ welfare at its core.
“Our players are at the heart of everything we do. As global ambassadors and icons of our sport, they deserve an environment that allows them to perform at their best, recover properly, and connect meaningfully with fans around the world,” she said.
Leeswadtrakul added that the extended competition windows would provide more balanced scheduling and greater recovery time between matches while helping expand badminton’s global reach through increased television coverage.
The 2027-28 season will also mark the introduction of badminton’s new 3×15 scoring system, which comes into effect from January 4, 2027, as part of the BWF’s long-term strategy to modernise the sport and improve its presentation.
The qualification period for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will run from May 3, 2027, to April 30, 2028. Dates and host cities for the 2027 Sudirman Cup Finals, the 2027 BWF World Championships and the 2028 Thomas and Uber Cup Finals will be announced separately.
