Indian Youngsters Gear Up for Hong Kong Open Super 500 Amidst Senior Players’ Absence

    September 9, 2024

With India’s senior badminton stars taking a break following their intense campaign at the Paris Olympics, the spotlight shifts to the country’s rising talents as they gear up for the Hong Kong Open Super 500, which kicks off on Tuesday. The tournament offers a crucial opportunity for these youngsters to make their mark on the international stage and build momentum for the new Olympic cycle leading up to Paris 2028.

One of the key highlights for India will be the return of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand to the BWF World Tour circuit. The talented women’s doubles duo, ranked No. 26 in the world, missed three consecutive tournaments after their quarterfinal exit at the Canada Open.

Despite a promising third-place finish at the Singapore Open in June, Treesa and Gayatri were unable to secure a spot for the Paris Olympics, largely due to an inconsistent season marred by injuries and form issues.

Nonetheless, the pair has already shown their potential at key tournaments. Earlier this year, they were instrumental in India’s historic triumph at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Malaysia, pulling off significant upsets against higher-ranked opponents like Japan’s Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida, as well as Thailand’s Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai. This success, however, was followed by a slump in form, with only a semifinal finish in Singapore offering any consolation.

As Treesa and Gayatri begin their journey in the 2024-2028 Olympic cycle, the young duo will aim to find consistency and improve their world rankings. Their performance at the Hong Kong Open will be closely watched, as they seek to make a deeper run and recapture the form that once made them a formidable pair on the world stage.

The Pandada sisters, Rutaparna and Swetaparna, will also represent India in the women’s doubles competition, adding depth to India’s contingent in this category.

In men’s singles, the spotlight is on Priyanshu Rajawat, one of India’s most promising young shuttlers. The 2022 Orleans Masters champion is aiming to build on his recent form, having secured a third-place finish at the Canada Open. The Hong Kong Open presents another chance for Priyanshu to prove his mettle and aim for a podium finish, further boosting his confidence as he continues to establish himself on the international circuit.

Joining Priyanshu in the main draw will be Kiran George, another talented player with aspirations of making a name for himself at this Super 500 event. Meanwhile, Chirag Sen and Manav Choudhary will look to battle through the qualification rounds to earn a place in the main draw.

With PV Sindhu taking a well-deserved break after the Olympics, India’s women’s singles campaign will be led by Aakarshi Kashyap and Tanya Hemanth. Both players have shown promise in domestic circuits, but the Hong Kong Open will be an important test of their ability to compete against top-tier international opponents.

For Aakarshi and Tanya, this tournament offers a valuable opportunity to gain experience and continue their development as they aspire to fill the void left by Sindhu and Saina Nehwal in Indian women’s badminton.

In men’s doubles, India’s hopes rest on the relatively unknown duo of Vaibhav Jadhav and Ashith Surya, who will look to make an impression at the Hong Kong Open. Competing against a strong field, they will be aiming to gain valuable experience and hopefully cause some upsets along the way.

In mixed doubles, the experienced pairing of B Sumeeth Reddy and N Sikki Reddy will represent India. The veteran duo has consistently performed on the international circuit and will look to capitalize on their experience to secure a deeper finish in the tournament. Their ability to coordinate and perform under pressure will be crucial in navigating through the highly competitive field in Hong Kong.

As India’s younger shuttlers take center stage at the Hong Kong Open, this tournament serves as a critical platform for them to show their talent and gain invaluable experience. With senior players like PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen taking a temporary hiatus, this event provides an opportunity for these rising stars to not only step up but also shape the future of Indian badminton on the global stage.
