PV Sindhu clinches the Swiss Open title; HS Prannoy goes down fighting in the finals

 

India’s flag bearer in Badminton PV Sindhu returns to form with a striking win against Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the finals to clinch the Swiss Open. The Indian shuttler defeated Ongbamrungphan in the finals with a 21-16, 21-8 scoreline as she dominated her opponent from start to finish.

Sindhu fought and conquered her memories from the past when she lost to Carolina Marin in the final. Sindhu lost 21-12, 21-5 against the Spanish shuttler in utter domination. But she fought past her demons to clinch the title this year.

The Swiss Open is a fourth tier tournament this year and World no. 7 PV Sindhu was the top-seeded player in the women’s singles category and she was very comfortable in dominating other shuttlers en route to the finals where again she made light work of Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the finals. Sindhu defeated the Thai shuttler at the German Open aswell and has been a thorn in her flesh for some time now. Sindhu has one of the most one sided records against Busanan Ongbamrungphan.

The finals started very evenly as the first game hung in balance till the score was 13-13. But soon Sindhu shifted gears and that took Busanan by surprise as the Indian started dominating the rallies as she shifted to full attack mode. In no time he collected a whirlwind of points and closed out the first game 21-16.

The momentum that Sindhu built in the first game was carried forward in the second game as well and Busanan crumbled under that pressure and simply was no match for her. Sindhu dominated proceedings in the second game and forced Busanan to commit mistakes. The Double Olympic medallist closed out the second game and the match overall with a 21-8 scoreline proving her dominance of the Thai shuttler.

On the other hand in the Men’s Singles category, Indonesian Jonatan Christie completely outplayed HS Prannoy in the men’s singles final. Christie was at the top of her game as he outplayed Prannoy with sheer accuracy and a very solid game where he hardly made any errors and did not even allow the Indian to come back into the game. Christie won  21-12, 21-18 to clinch the Swiss Open title.
