Indian badminton has found a new star in Ayush Shetty, who delivered a breakthrough performance at the Badminton Asia Championships 2026, etching his name among the country’s elite shuttlers despite falling short in the final.
The 20-year-old produced a fearless campaign, defeating some of the biggest names in the sport before finishing runner-up to China’s Shi Yuqi. While the final loss was a setback, Shetty’s journey to the summit clash has been widely hailed as historic.
Shetty’s run included a stunning semi-final victory over defending champion and Olympic silver medallist Kunlavut Vitidsarn, further strengthening his growing reputation as a “giant killer.” Prior to that, he had cruised through the early rounds without dropping a game, overcoming top opponents such as Li Shifeng, Chi Yu-jen, and Jonatan Christie in straight sets.
With this remarkable performance, Shetty became the first Indian in over six decades to reach the men’s singles final of the continental tournament since Dinesh Khanna in 1965. His silver medal also marks a significant milestone, as it is India’s first-ever men’s singles silver at the Badminton Asia Championships.
In a broader historical context, Shetty is now only the second Indian shuttler to finish above bronze in an individual event at the competition. His achievement also ended an eight-year wait for an Indian men’s singles medal at the tournament, following HS Prannoy’s bronze-winning effort in 2018.
The young shuttler’s rise has placed him in the same conversation as Indian badminton greats such as Prakash Padukone, Pullela Gopichand, Anup Sridhar, and Suresh Goel—all of whom have previously reached the semi-finals of the prestigious event.
Adding another feather to his cap, Shetty also became the youngest Indian male shuttler to win a medal at the championships at just 20, surpassing Padukone’s long-standing record set in 1976.
Coming on the back of his recent US Open Super 300 title, Shetty’s latest performance signals the arrival of a new force in Indian badminton. Though the final did not go his way, his fearless run and record-breaking achievements have already secured him a lasting place in the sport’s history.
With age on his side and confidence soaring, Ayush Shetty’s rise could mark the beginning of a new era for Indian badminton.
