The Boston Celtics entered the season facing significant uncertainty. Jayson Tatum was recovering from a torn Achilles suffered in the previous postseason, while president Brad Stevens reshaped the roster to move the franchise below the luxury-tax threshold after a championship run.
Despite those changes, Boston has maintained one of the league’s most consistent defensive identities.
Defensive Consistency Remains Elite
Under head coach Joe Mazzulla, the Celtics have remained among the NBA’s top defensive teams. They finished No. 2 in defensive efficiency in each of Mazzulla’s first two seasons, posting a 110.6 rating both years, followed by a No. 4 ranking last season at 110.1.
Given the roster turnover, including a new center rotation featuring Neemias Queta and Luka Garza, along with multiple changes at forward before Tatum’s return, a regression seemed likely.
Instead, Boston has sustained its level, recording a 111.5 defensive rating this season, once again ranking fourth in the league.
Defensive Growth Down the Stretch
The Celtics’ defense has improved as the season progressed. During a strong stretch beginning in late January, Boston held opponents under 100 points in five of seven games and has gone 22-8 over that span, lowering its defensive rating to 107.9.
An Eastern Conference assistant coach noted that the team has elevated its defensive intensity, highlighting Derrick White as a tone-setter. The coach explained that White’s energy has influenced younger contributors such as Jordan Walsh, Baylor Scheierman, and Hugo Gonzalez, while improved rotations and familiarity with Queta anchoring the interior have strengthened the unit.
Eastern Conference Takes Notice
According to an Eastern Conference scout speaking to Heavy Sports, Boston’s defense stands out as the most reliable in the conference. The scout acknowledged improvements from teams like the New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets, Atlanta Hawks, and Detroit Pistons, but emphasized that none match the Celtics’ consistency or their ability to execute a disciplined, playoff-style defensive approach on a nightly basis.
The scout added that Boston’s defensive structure presents a significant challenge for any opponent entering the playoffs.
As the playoffs approach, the Celtics’ identity remains clear. Regardless of roster changes or early-season uncertainty, their defense continues to position them as a formidable contender in the Eastern Conference.
