Rudy Gobert Explains the Greatness of Nikola Jokic

The dominance and success of Nikola Jokic in recent years have redefined what is expected of a modern center.

One might think that those overshadowed by him would feel resentment, but for Rudy Gobert, each matchup against the three-time MVP only increases his respect and admiration. The four-time Defensive Player of the Year acknowledged both the immense challenge of facing him and the gratitude of competing against such a unique talent.

In recent seasons, Gobert has witnessed some of Jokic’s best performances firsthand.

On April 10, 2024, in a regular season game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jokic posted 41 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 16-for-20 (80%). Nearly a year later, on April 1, he delivered another masterpiece with 61 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, shooting 18-for-29 (62.1%).

While these games only deepened Gobert’s respect for Jokic’s complete skill set, the Frenchman believes he has learned how to limit the Nuggets’ leader over time.

That was evident in the second round of the 2024 Playoffs. Even though Jokic averaged 29 points, 11.4 rebounds, 7.9 assists, and 1.6 steals, Gobert, who put up 10.3 points, 10.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.3 blocks, had the more decisive impact on the series, helping Minnesota advance after a grueling seven-game battle.

For Gobert, what truly sets Jokic apart is his adaptability. Speaking on the The Old Man and The Three podcast, he said that when he wakes up knowing he’ll face Jokic, he feels grateful to have the chance to try to stop one of the best players in the world. He described how Jokic’s mind works, how he adjusts to every situation, and how he almost always makes the right decision… even when tired and logging heavy minutes—which, in Gobert’s view, makes him unique.

Jokic’s basketball IQ is extraordinary, but what separates him even further is his durability and constant availability. He takes on leadership with full commitment, which is why the Nuggets remain contenders even after moving pieces like Michael Porter Jr. this past summer.

As long as Jokic is healthy and on the floor, Denver will be considered a contender despite the growing competition in the Western Conference. Even rivals like Gobert openly acknowledge him as one of the sport’s greatest elite forces.

For many, he is the best player on the planet today.
