Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra has backed Dhruv Jurel to be an all-format player for India. Jurel was recently added to India’s ODI squad as a backup wicket-keeper for the series against the West Indies, getting his call-up ahead of Rishabh Pant.

The right-hander recently scored 173 runs in three innings against Sri Lanka at an impressive average of 86.50. Jurel was the third-highest run-getter in the series. Chopra said Jurel has all the ingredients to be India’s next all-format star.

“He can become an all-format player because the guy has guts. His discipline is such that he can. If you see Dhruv Jurel, you realise that this guy is actually quite sorted. He says that he works so hard that he becomes a machine. He says that he does not care what pressure and demand is, he doesn’t care and does not give his mind a chance to think about it,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Chopra recalled how Jurel practiced hard during the Test series against England and reaped rewards for the same.

“During the 2024 Test series against England, after the Visakhapatnam Test, there was a week-long break. Almost all players went back home during the break, but Jurel went back to where he practiced and batted for 230 overs in 2 days with Zubin Bharucha. So, I think he can become a player for all three formats. It is just a matter of getting opportunities. He doesn’t need to change anything; his graph is going upwards. He has a very high ceiling,” Aakash Chopra recalled.

Jurel scored 190 runs in four innings against England in 2024 at an average of 63.33 while making his Test debut in the same series

Jurel might not get his chance against the West Indies as KL Rahul is India’s first-choice wicketkeeper in ODIs.
