Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra reckons death bowling could be one of South Africa’s weaknesses in the T20 World Cup. Chopra highlighted Kagiso Rabada or any of the other South African fast bowler is not a gun death bowler.
The South African bowlers conceded 221 runs in the second T20I against the West Indies at Centurion on Thursday. The Proteas are placed in Group D in the T20 World Cup.
“Death bowling might be a concern because Kagiso Rabada is not your gun death bowler, nor are Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch and Marco Jansen. They have a lot of fast-bowling options, but this team does not have too many who bowl well or take wickets at the death,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
Chopra highlighted that South Africa also don’t have wicket-taking spinners in the team, which could be their Achilles Heel in the subcontinent conditions.
“They don’t have genuine wicket-takers in the spin department because we are not seeing Tabraiz Shamsi here. Keshav Maharaj, George Linde, or else Aiden Markram – spin looks 50-50. You need a little more depth and wicket-taking ability in spin in Indian conditions, which this team lacks,” he observed.
The renowned commentator said South African batters’ form was a hit and miss in the T20I series against India.
“When we saw them playing last time, although it was a bilateral series, so I don’t know whether one should take it seriously or not, the unit is slightly up and down in the batting order. The form is there at times and not there on other occasions,” he said.”A slight inconsistency remains with this team. Inconsistency is a bit of a problem. Otherwise, they have a lot of striking power in batting,” the cricketer-turned-commentator added.
South Africa will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Canada on February 9.
