Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra has opined that MS Dhoni has taught everyone the art of letting go. Chopra highlighted that Dhoni had a golden opportunity to complete 5000 Test runs and play 100 matches in the red-ball format but he called time on his Test career in the middle of the series against Australia.
Dhoni is regarded as one of the best Indian captains and led India to 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. The veteran was known for his astute captaincy, brilliant wicket-keeping and blistering batting down the order.
He ended his Test career with 4876 runs in 90 Test matches at an average of 38.09.
“If you have to learn anything, there cannot be a better example than Dhoni. The easiest thing in life is to hold on to something you get and not let it go. That’s what we all do. The most difficult thing is to let go. It becomes even more difficult to let go if you are a superstar,” Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
“However, he let it go easily. He was the Test captain. No one was saying anything to him, but in the middle of the series, he said, ‘I am done.’ He had played 90 Test matches. He had reached very close to 5,000 runs. Neither the thought of 100 Tests nor scoring 5,000 Test runs came to his mind,” he added.
On the other hand, the renowned commentator noted that Rohit Sharma has given the life lesson of following one’s words and leading from the front.
“Don’t do as I say, do as I do. It’s said that leaders lead by example. They lead from the front, and we get to learn that from Rohit Sharma. He has taught that whatever he wants his team to do, he would do that himself first. I will put the team before me, and then, automatically, the entire team is going to follow the path,” the former India opener said.
“He did that in white-ball cricket. He said it’s not about Rohit Sharma anymore. It’s about where I want to take Indian cricket. He said he would walk the talk. Only talk used to happen before that. He said he would be the brand ambassador,” he added.
Rohit is currently playing in the ODI series against Afghanistan.
