Former Indian Test batter Aakash Chopra said one’s got to feel for Yashasvi Jaiswal after the left-hander could not find a place in the three-match ODI series against England. Jaiswal had received his chances against Afghanistan after Virat Kohli was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Jaiswal, who was dismissed cheaply after scoring four runs in the second game, scored a stunning knock of 110 runs off 86 balls in the third ODI at Chennai on Saturday against the visitors. The left-hander smashed 14 fours and three sixes in his blistering knock as he batted at the top of his game.
The southpaw got off to a brisk start and went on to complete his second ODI century. He added 170 runs off 137 balls with veteran batter Rohit Sharma for the opening alliance.
“You’ve got to feel for Yashasvi Jaiswal. He has played very few matches and has scored two centuries. He scored a century in the last match against South Africa and was dropped for the next series. He scored a century in the last match against Afghanistan now and has been dropped for the next series,” Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
“What more can I do? He will ask that question of himself for sure, but this is what it is. Shubman Gill is there with Rohit Sharma. Ishan Kishan provides you with multiple options. He is a keeper, backup middle order, and backup opener as well. He is one guy who fits everywhere. However, you have got to feel for Yashasvi. He is scoring runs, but his name is still not coming,” he added.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli has been picked for England ODIs but his participation is subject to fitness clearance.
“Virat Kohli is subject to fitness. I think he has a fitness test on the 26th. When he clears that fitness test, he will be playing. He is a part of the squad, but he has to be fit to play. Otherwise, you might once again see Yashasvi Jaiswal’s name being added to this team,” he said.
Chopra said Jaiswal will stay out of contention as Virat Kohli will eventually take his place back in the ODI team.
“However, at this point in time, it is Virat Kohli. Even in the recently concluded series, Yashasvi had come only when Virat Kohli got injured, or else he had no chance to come. But then Kohli might be back now, and if he comes, Yashasvi remaining out is obviously confirmed, but that’s a little sad,” Chopra observed.
India will play three ODIs against England.
