Former Australian skipper Aaron Finch questioned Kolkata Knight Riders’ tactics after they suffered a 32-run loss against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Tuesday. CSK posted a decent score of 192 runs on the board whereas KKR were restricted to 160-7 in their 20 overs.
The visitors never got going in the run-chase as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to achieve any kind of momentum. None of the KKR batters could breach the 35-run mark and convert their starts in the run-chase. KKR could only manage 36-2 in the Powerplay overs and thus failed to make the most of the field restrictions.
Aaron Finch said on ESPN Cricinfo, “Certainly wasn’t pretty. A lot of question marks about KKR, particularly in that run chase. Some of their tactics were very questionable. We praised the decision for Sunil Narine to go to the top of the order. It didn’t come off today [24 in 17 balls], but it was something different. At least they tried it. But some of the other decisions were a bit strange. And they were never in the hunt.”
Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi scored 28 and 27 runs respectively. The duo added 50 runs off 31 balls after KKR lost two wickets but Finch questioned the pair’s approach.
He concluded, “We talked about Rahane and Raghuvanshi batting together, about how that can be such a stalling [factor]. And their partnership wasn’t bad, but there’s still no point of difference in that partnership. They don’t take the bowling on. They don’t get to a point where the opposition captain has to make some serious decisions about reshuffling their team.”
Kolkata Knight Riders will next take on Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Friday.
