India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has opened up on Rohit Sharma’s IPL future ahead of the 2025 mega auction. Ashwin feels after a stage, money doesn’t matter for some of the players like the Indian ODI and Test captain.
Rohit recently led India to T20 World Cup glory after they defeated South Africa in the final. The right-hander led from the front, scoring 257 runs in eight matches at an average of 36.71 and a blistering strike rate of 156.71.
Meanwhile, Rohit was replaced by Hardik Pandya as Mumbai Indians’ captain in IPL 2024. Rohit led MI to five titles in the IPL and he is joint-successful captain along with MS Dhoni in the tournament’s history.
However, ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, there have been reports that Rohit could play for a different franchise but Ashwin reckons the veteran will be happy to play for MI as money is not his top priority.
Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube Channel, “In fact, even if you think like Rohit, it’s not wrong at all. I don’t want any headache. I have been a captain for India. I have captained for Mumbai many times. Even if I am not a captain, I am going to Mumbai happily. If I play for Mumbai, it’s super. I am sure most players are like that. After a stage, money doesn’t matter for some of those players. That’s the thing.”
On the other hand, Rohit recently said he is not going to stop anytime soon and he will continue to lead India in ODIs and Test cricket.
He said at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards, “There is a reason I won five IPL trophies. I’m not going to stop, because once you get the taste of winning games, winning Cups, you don’t want to stop and we’ll keep pushing as a team. We’ll keep striving for better things in the future.”
Rohit will lead in the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh.
