Former Indian batter Ajay Jadeja believes Arshdeep Singh got slightly greedy in his final over as he was looking for his fifth wicket. The left-arm seamer returned with decent figures of 4-70 in the series opener.
The left-arm seamer accounted for Will Young, Henry Nicholls, in-form Glenn Phillips and Kyle Jamieson. However, his figures were spoiled in the end by Blair Tickner, who scored a fine cameo of 23-ball 34 to help New Zealand post 184 runs on the board.
Jadeja said Singh was searching for his fifth wicket and didn’t bowl well in his final over.
“I would call him slightly greedy. He himself said that as well. If you remove his last over, he had dismissed four batters before that and had given 40-odd runs. He got slightly greedy for the fifth wicket in the last over,” Jadeja said on SonyLiv.
Jadeja added that Singh is proving he can play in the 50-over format.
“It happens. It’s natural, but Arshdeep Singh is showing that he can play in ODIs as well, which I believe is a very good thing when a left-arm seamer gets added to this attack with (Jasprit) Bumrah. The competition has increased a lot, which is very good for India,” Jadeja observed.
On the other hand, Jadeja hailed Anshul Kamboj for adding an extra yard of pace to his bowling. Kamboj returned with impressive figures of 2-22 in his quota of 10 overs.
“He bowled extremely well. The vision everyone had was that he didn’t have pace when he played in England and was bowling a lot of no-balls. I think he had come after playing a lot of cricket then. So a guy also gets tired. It’s not that easy,” he said.
Jadeja said Kamboj was the most accurate Indian bowler in the series opener against the Kiwis.
“Then he was playing for the first time, but the consistency and the slight increase in his pace he showed today (Wednesday), if we talk about the accuracy amongst the four bowlers, it’s Anshul Kamboj,” Jadeja observed.
The second ODI between India and New Zealand will be played at the Hnry Stadium, Wellington on Saturday.
