Former Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has showered praise on Manav Suthar after the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Rahane highlighted two key observations about Suthar’s bowling after the series.

The former Indian vice-captain noted that the left-arm orthodox spinner doesn’t depend on the pitch to turn the ball. Furthermore, Rahane said Suthar is smart in varying his pace.

Suthar had an impressive series against Sri Lanka, taking 16 wickets in two games at an average of 21.06. The youngster also bagged a 10-wicket haul in the opening Test, playing a key role in India’s 165-run win at Galle.

“I have noticed two things about Manav. The first thing is that for him, the pitch does not matter, whether it turns or not. His speed through the air helps him deceive the batters. It is important and good that you do not depend on the wicket as a spinner. Then you can do well in any condition. The other thing was the way he altered the speed. He has been a quick learner in just three games. He bowled differently to each batter and used the angles well. Yes, it is early, but he has done well,” Rahane said in a video on his Hindi YouTube Channel.

On the other hand, Rahane said it would be imperative for India to adapt to the new conditions on their next Test tour of New Zealand. India will play two Test matches against the Kiwis.

“The conditions will be totally different in New Zealand. You need to read the wicket and adapt that way. In the last five to six years, we have seen that the team adapts well. I expect them to prepare well. The good thing was that they played a practice match in Sri Lanka. If they get the time for that in New Zealand too, it will be very crucial for mental and physical preparation, even skill-wise,” he expressed.

India are currently fifth in the WTC standings with a PCT of 51.52.
