Former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra has rejoined Delhi Capitals (DC) as their spin bowling coach, marking a return to the franchise where he began his Indian Premier League (IPL) career in 2008.
The appointment is part of a major restructuring of Delhi Capitals’ coaching setup ahead of the next IPL season. Mishra joins a revamped support staff featuring former India captain Sourav Ganguly as head coach, Yuvraj Singh as assistant coach and former Sri Lankan pacer Chaminda Vaas as fast bowling coach.
With extensive experience in the IPL, Mishra is expected to play an important role in developing the franchise’s spin bowling department.
The veteran leg-spinner featured in 162 IPL matches across 16 seasons, representing several franchises during his long career. He spent 10 seasons with Delhi, which was previously known as Delhi Daredevils, establishing a strong connection with the team.
Mishra last appeared in the IPL in 2024 and finished his playing career in the competition with 174 wickets, including impressive best bowling figures of 5/17.
One of his most remarkable achievements remains his record of three IPL hat-tricks, making him the only bowler in the tournament’s history to accomplish the feat.
His first hat-trick came for Delhi Daredevils in 2008, followed by another for Deccan Chargers in 2011. He completed his third while representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013.
Interestingly, Mishra will work alongside another multiple hat-trick achiever in Yuvraj Singh, who claimed two IPL hat-tricks during the 2009 season.
Mishra’s arrival could particularly benefit Delhi Capitals’ newly acquired spinner Zeeshan Ansari.
The left-arm wrist-spinner joined Delhi from Sunrisers Hyderabad in a trade deal that saw experienced fast bowler T Natarajan move in the opposite direction.
Working under Mishra, Ansari will have the opportunity to learn from one of the IPL’s most experienced wrist-spinners.
Other young spin options, including Vipraj Nigam and Rehan Ahmed, could also benefit from Mishra’s guidance if Delhi Capitals decide to retain them for the upcoming season.
The latest appointment underlines Delhi’s efforts to strengthen its coaching structure by bringing together former international players with considerable experience.
With Ganguly overseeing the team and specialists such as Mishra and Vaas handling the bowling departments, Delhi Capitals will hope their revamped support staff can help the franchise build a stronger squad for IPL 2027.
