Legendary Sunil Gavaskar feels crediting newly appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir for India’s second Test win against Bangladesh at Green Park, Kanpur will not be fair. Gavaskar believes Indian captain Rohit Sharma deserves a lot of credit for the win.
After more than two days were washed out due to rain, India came up with an ultra-aggressive approach to register a seven-wicket win to take the series by 2-0. The hosts were able to skittle out Bangladesh at 233 and then declared after smashing 285-9 off just 34.4 overs to take a 52-run lead.
The Tigers were then bundled out for 146 and the home team chased down 95 runs to complete a historic win. Rohit Sharma also laid the foundation in the first innings as he clobbered two sixes against Khaled Mahmud on the first two balls he faced. The Indian captain scored a fine cameo of 11-ball 23.
“Gambhir has only been coaching for a couple of months, so attributing this approach to him is foot-licking of the highest quality. Gambhir himself hardly ever batted in this fashion like McCullum used to do. If any credit is due, it is solely to Rohit and nobody else,” wrote Gavaskar for Sporstar.
Meanwhile, Gavaskar lauded Rohit Sharma for leading from the front and motivating his players to play in an aggressive manner to get the desired result.
”While the England batting approach changed completely under the new regime of Ben Stokes and McCullum, we have seen over the last couple of years that Rohit has been batting like this and encouraging his team to do so as well,” wrote Gavaskar.
Rohit will be next in action in the three-match Test series against New Zealand, starting October 16.
