Former Indian batter Subramaniam Badrinath has blamed the team management for Jasprit Bumrah’s injury ahead of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Bumrah was ruled out with a knee injury and could not play the third ODI against England.
The ace pacer was then replaced by Auqib Nabi Dar in the Test squad for the Sri Lanka series. Meanwhile, Bumrah has been troubled by injury woes in the recent past and had returned to the ODI squad after a long hiatus.
“I don’t know who made the decision. COE will not make the selection, right? They will just say he is in this state and can play these matches and his body is in this state. But I think the captain, coach, and selectors are taking the decision. COE only passes the information. They are not selectors,” Badrinath said in a video on his YouTube channel.
Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy are currently recovering from a quadriceps injury. Moreover, Harshit Rana made a comeback after recovering from a knee injury but suffered a fresh injury on the UK tour. India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill also suffered from cramps in the first and third ODI against England when he went past the 50-run mark.
Varun Chakravarthy is out with an injury, whereas Prince Yadav was also injured in the second T20I against Zimbabwe, and thus the long list of injured players has put India on the back foot.
Badrinath is not sure about the root cause of so many injuries.
“I don’t have an immediate answer to the root cause of so many injuries. It is important to see what kind of injuries these are. At high-level professional sport, injuries are common. Sai Sudharsan got hit by a ball, with Bumah, it is a chronic injury because of being overused and fitness is not Sundar’s forte, he is injury-prone. His fitness needs a lot of work. Management and monitoring is very important. Injuries are bound to happen and you cannot control it,” he said.
India will next take on Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series, starting August 15.
