In a recent press conference, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the concerns regarding Ravindra Jadeja’s exclusion from the Indian squad for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series in Sri Lanka. Agarkar emphasized that Jadeja has not been dropped from the team and remains a key player in India’s plans for future matches.
Agarkar explained the rationale behind not including both Jadeja and Axar Patel for the brief tour to Sri Lanka, noting their similar roles and contributions to the team. “I think it would have been really pointless to include both him (Jadeja) and Axar for this short series. We know what Jaddu does. He has had a terrific 50-Over World Cup, so he’s not at all dropped,” Agarkar stated.
Jadeja has been an integral part of the Indian cricket team across all formats, delivering commendable performances in the ODI World Cup 2023 and the T20 World Cup 2024. Given his consistent form and crucial role, Agarkar stressed that the decision to rest Jadeja was made to manage his workload effectively, particularly with a demanding Test season ahead.
The upcoming schedule includes ten Test matches for India – five at home against Bangladesh and New Zealand, followed by five against Australia later in the year. This period is seen as crucial for managing the workload of key players like Jadeja. “There’s a big Test season coming up, where he is likely to feature in a lot of the Tests,” Agarkar noted.
Agarkar reiterated that Jadeja remains very much in the selectors’ plans and that his absence from the Sri Lanka tour is merely a strategic decision to ensure he remains fit and fresh for the more significant challenges ahead.
“I don’t think three games would have mattered. We should have clarified after the selection that he’s not being dropped. He’s still within the scheme of things, and very important as it is,” Agarkar added.
Meanwhile, the Indian cricket team, along with the support staff, is set to depart for Sri Lanka on Monday, July 22. The newly appointed assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, will join the team directly in Sri Lanka, bringing his extensive experience and expertise to the coaching setup.
As the Indian team prepares for the Sri Lanka tour, fans can be rest assured that Ravindra Jadeja remains a vital part of India’s cricketing future. His exclusion from this short series is a calculated move to preserve his energy for the significant fixtures ahead, particularly in the Test arena where his all-round capabilities will be indispensable.
