Former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta has opened up on Rohit Sharma’s future ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. The former gloveman said Rohit’s performances should decide his future for the ODI showpiece.

It was earlier reported that Rohit would play his final ODI game at Lord’s but he answered the critics in style. However, Rohit scored a magnificent knock of 138 runs off 110 balls in the third ODI at the iconic venue as he became the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at Lord’s. 

But, his efforts went in vain as India could not chase down a gargantuan total of 388 runs and fell short by 27 runs in the end. Rohit has all the experience under his belt and he would hold the key in the major tournament.

Deep Dasgupta said on his YouTube Channel, Deep Point, “What the BCCI secretary said is the right direction. Just keep any x player in Rohit’s place and think of how his place in the side will get decided. If he is performing, he’ll stay in the side. You can’t take a call before every series. Retirement is completely his call. But otherwise, if he’s performing, it’s a straightforward call. Selection has to be performance-based.”

On the other hand, the former Bengal cricketer reckons it is imperative to give enough game time to a backup opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, before the ODI showpiece.

“The next question is how you manage someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has scored two centuries in his last three innings. You also have to give him some game time before the World Cup. It’s important to remember that as well and see if Shubman Gill can play at No.3 in some match so that all three of Rohit, Jaiswal, and Gill play,” said Dasgupta (via the aforementioned source).

“Gametime for Jaiswal will be important so that if needed in the World Cup, he’s ready to go. It shouldn’t feel sudden if he has to play in the World Cup a month before.”

India’s next ODI series is against the West Indies.
