Former Indian wicket-keeper bat Deep Dasgupta reckons Indian selectors and team management will need to give opportunities to Yashasvi Jaiswal to prepare him as a backup opener for the ODI World Cup. Jaiswal scored a fine century in his last ODI game against Afghanistan, scoring a fine knock of 110 runs off 86 balls.
On the other hand, there were doubts raised on Rohit Sharma’s future in the 50-over version. However, Rohit scored a magnificent knock of 138 runs off 110 balls in the third ODI against England to put all doubts on bed.
Still, Rohit’s future is expected to be discussed in a BCCI meeting on Thursday.
Deep Dasgupta said on his YouTube Channel, “The problem and issue I have with this is that, as long as a cricketer is playing, Rohit hasn’t retired. He scored a century in the last match, and having said that, Yashasvi has also scored two centuries in the last three matches. I know this is a good talking point and people want to talk about it. But if a player is playing, again, you will have to do a little rotation here as well. You will have to give Yashasvi an opportunity here too. If Rohit is playing, is in form and is scoring runs, you will have to give him an opportunity as well.”
“And somewhere, you will have to bring Yashasvi Jaiswal into the picture as well, whatever the outcome may be with someone else, because you need to have another opener ready. And with the form Yashasvi is in, he is the best option right now. I think you need to keep him getting game time before the World Cup, before 2027, so that he is also ready, irrespective of what your other thoughts are,” he added.
The former Bengal cricketer said the same selection parameters should be applied for every player.
“With Rohit Sharma, I know it is a great talking point, whether he will play or not, clarity and all of that. But, on a very, very honest note, yaar, if he is scoring runs, you decide what the parameters are for every player and apply the same to everyone, right?”
India’s next ODI series is a three-match series against the West Indies.
