Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has backed Shubman Gill to make a comeback into the T20I team after he scored a stunning knock of 223 runs in the second ODI against the West Indies at the Barsapara Crciket Stadium, Guwahati on Wednesday.
India was chasing a par score of 406 runs but Gill looked in complete control throughout his innings, scoring his 11th ODI century and leading India to an eight-wicket win. The Indian captain completed his second double century in ODI format off just 117 balls, which is the fastest in the format.
The flamboyant batter also became the second batter to score a double hundred in ODI cricket while chasing after Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. Gill’s 223 is the highest individual score in ODI format while chasing and it is also the highest individual score by the Indian captain in the 50-over format.
“223 not out is amazing enough in itself, but to do it in a chase, and with the conviction that he has shown. Right from the get-go, he was very sure, played lovely shots in the powerplay, and showed good intent, but that intent never dropped. It just kept going up. Shubman is someone who is capable of playing both ODIs and Tests. In any other country, he would be playing all three formats. India is so strong that he has not found a place in the T20 setup consistently, and I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t get there very soon,” Dinesh Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
Karthik praised Gill for his calm demeanor on the field, hailing him for not letting anything disturb him.
“On and off the field, his behavior is exemplary, for a young kid, he has got a very mature head on his shoulders, he has a good amount of fun off the field, but even when he is doing whatever he is doing in terms of fun or chilling, he is very dedicated to his work in the gym, fitness, running, and hours of practice as well. That, I don’t think he compromises for anything else,” he added.
Gill also scored 732 runs in 16 innings of IPL 2026 while leading Gujarat Titans at an average of 45.75.
