India’s veteran wicket-keeper bat Dinesh Karthik is likely to retire from Indian Premier League after the the end of the upcoming 2024 season. The right-hander will take a call on his International career after the conclusion of the IPL.
Karthik, who recently commentated in the Test series between India and England, has been playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last couple of seasons.
The Tamil Nadu batter has scored 4516 runs in 242 IPL matches at an average of 25.81 and a strike rate of 132.71 and he is currently the 10th highest run-getter in the IPL history.
Karthik is only behind Dhoni (180) for most dismissals for a wicketkeeper in the league with 169 dismissals. The veteran wicket-keeper bat has represented a total of six franchises in the IPL.
Meanwhile, Karthik had an underwhelming IPL 2023, scoring 140 runs in 13 matches at an average of 11.67 and thus could not deliver for RCB. However, Karthik had a fantastic run in IPL 2022, scoring 330 runs at 55.00 in 16 matches at a blistering strike rate of 183.33 and played a key role in taking the franchise to the playoff stages.
After his impressive performance in the IPL, Karthik was also picked in the 2022 T20 World Cup squad but could not deliver for the national team.
“This 2024 edition will be his (Dinesh Karthik’s) last IPL. He will decide his international retirement after the IPL,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by news agency PTI on conditions of anonymity.
Karthik played for Kolkata Knight Riders for four seasons and also led the franchise to the playoffs in IPL 2018.
IPL 2024 will begin on March 22 with RCB taking on defending champions CSK at Chennai.
