Dinesh Karthik Named Batting Coach and Mentor of RCB After Retirement

Former India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has been appointed as the new batting coach and mentor of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team. The announcement came on Monday, July 1, shortly after Karthik’s retirement from all forms of cricket following the conclusion of IPL 2024.

The 39-year-old boasts an illustrious career, having been a part of the Indian squad that clinched the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. He has played in every single edition of the IPL until his retirement, with two different stints at RCB.

His recent tenure from 2022 to 2024 was notably productive, particularly his standout performance as a finisher in the 2022 season, which earned him a spot in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia. Despite a quieter season in 2023, Karthik ended his playing career on a high in 2024, scoring over 300 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 187.36.

In a recent interview with Cricbuzz, Karthik had expressed his desire to transition into coaching. “Coaching and broadcasting is what I’m thinking I’ll mix in the foreseeable future. It’s not as simple as it looks. But I must admit, a few of the players who’ve played in RCB itself are very keen to come and work with me in Chennai. So, that is a positive. It’s very exciting,” he said.

Reacting to his new role at RCB, Karthik shared his enthusiasm, stating, “Coaching at a professional level is incredibly exciting for me and is something I’m truly passionate about as a new chapter in my life. Hopefully, the breadth of my experiences as a player can contribute to the development of the group and bring added value.”

Karthik emphasized the importance of both technical proficiency and match intelligence. “I believe that cricket success hinges not only on technical proficiency but also on match intelligence and composure. I am eager to coach and mentor our batting group, helping them to not only refine their method but also to develop the keen match awareness needed to excel under pressure. It’s also great that I can continue my association with RCB as the franchise continues to move from strength to strength,” he added.

Mo Bobat, RCB’s director of cricket, expressed his delight at Karthik’s appointment, highlighting the value Karthik’s experience brings to the team. “DK is an excellent addition to our coaching group. He was thrilling to watch on the field, and I’m sure he will be just as impactful as a coach. His longevity and track record as a player speak volumes about his skill and dedication. I know he will bring that same quality and commitment to this new professional chapter.”

As Karthik steps into his new role, RCB fans and players alike are eager to see the impact he will have on the team’s performance. With his wealth of experience and deep understanding of the game, Karthik’s addition to the coaching staff is expected to bolster the team’s batting performance and overall strategic approach in the upcoming IPL season.
