Former England skipper Nasser Hussain is not in favor of Brendon McCullum taking over the coaching baton in limited-overs format for Three Lions. The former New Zealand skipper is currently England’s Test coach and Hussain wants it to remain the same.
Meanwhile, England’s white-ball coach Matthew Mott relinquished his duties with immediate effect on Tuesday. ECB has appointed Marcus Trescothick as England’s interim head coach in white-ball formats and have invited applications for the vacant role.
Hussain reckons it is good if the coaches get time for themselves as coaching in all three formats can become very hectic for them.
Hussain said it worked for India when Rahul Dravid coached the team in all three formats but might not be a great decision for England.
Nasser Hussain said on Sky Sports, “I don’t think it’s the right thing to do. It has worked for other nations… for India, Rahul Dravid did it very well, but I don’t think McCullum or others would want it [both jobs]. Coaches are quite happy having some time to themselves, and have the ability to do some work in the IPL maybe – though whether an England coach could do that at the same time, I don’t know?”
Mott led England to glory in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia but since then the team’s performance hasn’t been up to the mark. England finished in seventh place in the ODI World Cup 2023 standings with only three wins in nine games. Furthermore, the Jos Buttler-led team suffered a crushing loss against India in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Hussain added the results matter as ultimately a team is judged by them.
“My first reaction is it’s a bit of a shame, but not unexpected. Ultimately you’re judged by results. Results started very well, on the back of continuing the Eoin Morgan/Trevor Bayliss era… they had that immediate success, winning the T20 World Cup in 2022.”
England recently registered a 3-0 Test series win against the West Indies while playing at home.
