Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has decided to skip IPL 2026. 1355 players have registered for IPL 2026 mini auction, but Maxwell’s name is not there in the list. Maxwell had failed to deliver the goods in the previous season of the tournament, managing only 48 runs in six innings at an average of eight and a strike rate of 97.95. Thus, he was not retained by the Punjab Kings ahead of the auction.
The all-rounder was bought for INR 4.20 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Maxwell has scored 2,819 runs at a strike rate of 155.15 in his IPL career.
Maxwell wrote on Instagram, “After many unforgettable seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name into the auction this year. It’s a big call, and one I make with a lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me. The IPL has helped shape me as a cricketer and as a person.”
“I’ve been lucky to play with world-class teammates, represent incredible franchises, and perform in front of fans whose passion is unmatched. The memories, the challenges, and the energy of India will stay with me forever. Thank you for all your support over the years, hopefully see you soon. Cheers Maxi,” he added.
Earlier, PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting revealed why the franchise decided not to retain Maxwell. Ponting admitted that they were not able to get the best of Maxwell in the previous season and have decided to let him go.
“Love Glenn and what he brings to the game. Unfortunately, last year we weren’t able to get the best out of him,” Ponting told Star Sports.
“Looking ahead to this season, we didn’t feel he would be part of our starting team, so we decided to release him,” Ponting added.
The IPL 2026 auction is all set to take center stage on December 16, 2025, at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.
