Tension gripped the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday night as Gujarat Titans survived a dramatic late charge from Delhi Capitals to seal a thrilling one-run victory in a high-scoring Indian Premier League contest.
Defending a formidable total of 210 for four, Gujarat Titans held their nerve just enough as Delhi Capitals finished agonisingly short on 209 for eight in a match packed with momentum swings until the final delivery.
Delhi needed two runs from the last ball when David Miller faced Prasidh Krishna. Attempting a big shot against a short delivery, Miller swung hard but missed completely. As Miller and Kuldeep Yadav scrambled for a desperate single, wicketkeeper Jos Buttler reacted sharply to break the stumps, catching Kuldeep short at the striker’s end and sealing Gujarat’s dramatic win.
The closing moments were made even more painful for Delhi considering what happened one ball earlier. Miller had comfortably pulled Prasidh towards fine leg for what looked like an easy single but surprisingly chose not to run, keeping strike for the final ball. In hindsight, that decision proved costly.
Delhi’s remarkable late fightback was driven by K.L. Rahul’s outstanding 92 and Miller’s fearless finish. With 36 runs needed from the final two overs and four wickets remaining, the chase appeared to be slipping away. But Miller refused to surrender.
After retiring hurt earlier in the innings at the start of the 14th over because of a hand injury, the left-hander returned in the 17th over and launched a stunning assault. He hammered Mohammed Siraj for two sixes and a boundary in the penultimate over, reducing the equation dramatically to just 13 needed from the last six balls.
However, Gujarat’s earlier work with both bat and ball proved enough.
Rashid Khan delivered a match-winning spell, finishing with exceptional figures of 4-0-17-3. The Afghanistan leg-spinner struck at key moments, first removing Nitish Rana thanks to a superb catch at long-off by B. Sai Sudharsan. He then deceived the dangerous Sameer Rizvi with a brilliant wrong ’un before claiming Axar Patel later in the innings.
Those breakthroughs ultimately made the difference.
Earlier, Gujarat built their imposing total through important half-centuries from captain Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler and Washington Sundar. Their contributions ensured the visitors posted a challenging target on a surface where runs flowed freely.
In the end, though, this was a night defined by the finest margins. Delhi Capitals pushed Gujarat Titans to the brink with a courageous chase, but Rashid’s brilliance and Gujarat’s composure under pressure helped them escape with one of the narrowest victories of the IPL season.
