Former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has showered praise on Abhishek Sharma after India registered a comprehensive 72-run win against Zimbabwe in the Super 8 clash of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Thursday.
Sharma scored a crucial knock of 55 runs off just 30 balls to give a perfect start to his team and helped them post an above-par score of 256 runs on the board.
Singh said the left-hander has moved on from the string of ducks he had achieved in the group stage. The southpaw bagged three consecutive ducks in the first three matches of the tournament.
“When Abhishek plays, he plays in such explosive fashion only. It was just top-class batting. Earlier, he was out twice while playing cross bat shots, and now he took singles off such balls, he took his time in the first 5-7 deliveries, and then he started playing his shots. He was playing in such a flow that those ducks are quite far away now. It was a tough time for him, for sure. He is a very brave player,” Harbhajan Singh said on his YouTube channel.
The Turbanator doesn’t think there will be too many changes in India’s playing XI after the win against Zimbabwe. Sanju Samson replaced Rinku Singh whereas Axar Patel played in place of Washington Sundar. Singh also praised Tilak Varma for adding the finishing touches with a 16-ball 44.
“Tilak played a brilliant knock, he had come in at No.5 after the batting order changed, and he played freely. This batting order suits Tilak Varma. But I don’t think Rinku will play now in the coming matches, and I don’t think there will be too many changes now,” Harbhajan Singh opined.
India will take on the West Indies at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Sunday in what will be a virtual quarterfinal clash.
