Hardik Pandya, captain of Mumbai Indians and a key figure in India’s white-ball setup, is set to feature in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) for Baroda, playing under the leadership of his elder brother Krunal Pandya.
The tournament begins on November 23, marking Hardik’s return to domestic cricket in this competition for the first time since 2016.
This return adds a star boost to Baroda’s squad, which already boasts quality players, including skipper Krunal Pandya, who has been in stellar form both as a leader and player.
Hardik’s presence will strengthen the team’s chances as they aim to go a step further after finishing runners-up in last season’s SMAT, where they lost to Punjab by 20 runs in the final.
Despite a mixed performance in the recently concluded T20I series against South Africa, Hardik has demonstrated a renewed proficiency in handling pace and hard lengths, particularly evident in his home T20I series against Bangladesh. Known for his explosive batting and utility as a seam-bowling all-rounder, Hardik will bolster Baroda’s depth in both departments, giving the team a vital edge.
Hardik’s return is also strategic for his preparation ahead of India’s crucial white-ball series early next year. Playing in SMAT will keep him match-ready, allowing him to sharpen his skills and maintain form.
Krunal Pandya, a seasoned campaigner, has been instrumental in Baroda’s success. In the ongoing domestic season, he has amassed 367 runs in seven Ranji Trophy outings at an impressive average of 52.42, including three half-centuries and a century. Additionally, he has also contributed with the ball, showing his all-round brilliance.
Under Krunal’s captaincy, Baroda topped the Elite Group in the Ranji Trophy and performed admirably in last year’s SMAT, finishing second in their group and making it to the final. His ability to lead from the front will be crucial as Baroda eyes the SMAT title this time.
With Hardik’s inclusion, Baroda’s squad is significantly stronger. The duo of Hardik and Krunal brings unmatched experience and firepower to the team, complemented by their proven track records in domestic and international cricket. Hardik’s all-round abilities, combined with Krunal’s form and leadership, create a formidable combination that could propel Baroda to SMAT glory.
As Baroda prepares for their opening match on November 23, all eyes will be on the Pandya brothers, whose synergy and performances could define the team’s campaign.
