Has Matt Renshaw solved Australia’s middle-order issues?

    October 16, 2026

Matt Renshaw may have done enough to secure a place in Australia’s middle order for the foreseeable future, but questions remain over the composition of the rest of the batting line-up.

Renshaw’s career-best 190 in the first innings proved instrumental in rescuing Australia from a precarious position and earned him the Player of the Match award. He followed that effort with another valuable contribution of 82 in the second innings, while also picking up two wickets with his part-time off-spin.

Australia were in danger of surrendering control of the contest on the opening day after slipping to 124/6, with familiar concerns over their top-order batting once again coming to the fore. However, Renshaw steadied the innings and helped the hosts recover to post 390, a total they reached deep into the second day. Australia never looked back from there.

The performance has strengthened Renshaw’s case for the No. 5 position, potentially settling one of the selection debates surrounding Australia’s batting order, at least for the remainder of the series.

However, the situation is considerably less straightforward elsewhere, particularly when it comes to Marnus Labuschagne.

The right-hander’s wait for a 12th Test century continues, with his last hundred coming against England at Old Trafford during the 2023 Ashes. A century in the warm-up match ahead of the series had raised hopes of a revival, while scores of 37 in both innings of this Test offered further encouragement. Yet Labuschagne was unable to convert either start into a substantial contribution.

His numbers make for uncomfortable reading. Across the 24 Tests he has played since his last century, Labuschagne has averaged just 25.29, a significant decline for a batter who was once among Australia’s most dependable run-scorers.

His continued presence in the side has been aided by a lack of convincing alternatives making a strong case for selection. But with Renshaw strengthening his position, the selectors may have to reconsider their options.

Could Cameron Green – if passed fit – move into the No. 3 spot, or might Beau Webster be given a more prominent role at No. 7 after limited opportunities to contribute as an allrounder?

Renshaw may have addressed one of Australia’s pressing concerns. Resolving the remaining questions could prove considerably more complicated.
