Legendary Sunil Gavaskar wants Virat Kohli to hit a Test century at the Gabba in the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia. Kohli has scored a Test century at all the Australian venues, barring Brisbane. Kohli had returned to India for the birth of his first child after the first Test match at Adelaide on the 2020-21 tour of Australia and thus didn’t play the memorable Test at Brisbane.
Playing Downunder, Kohli has scored 1352 runs in 13 Test matches against Australia at an average of 54.08 with six centuries. Meanwhile, India has won the last two Test series on Australian soil and Kohli will hold the key once again.
Meanwhile, only Sunil Gavaskar and former England skipper Alastair Cook have scored centuries at all Australian venues and the Little Master wants Kohli to join the elite club.
Speaking at the Australia-India summer of cricket, Sunil Gavaskar said, “On an individual level, [my wish] maybe for Virat Kohli is that he becomes the third overseas player who’s scored a Test century in all the Australian venues. I think he doesn’t have one at the Gabba, so if he gets a century at The Gabba, that means he joins me and Alastair Cook.”
On the other hand, Virat Kohli had scored 51 runs off 43 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad at a strike rate of 118. Kohli was criticised by a lot of cricket boffins and the talisman had also given it back to his critics. Gavaskar was unhappy with the way Kohli had reacted after playing a sedate knock.
Gavaskar said on Star Sports, “Commentators questioned only when the strike rate was 118. I’m not too sure. I don’t watch too many matches, so I don’t know what the other commentators have said otherwise. But if you have a strike of 118 and then you get out in the 14th or the 15th with a strike-rate of 118, I mean, if you want applause for that, that’s a little bit different. That’s different.”
Virat Kohli was at his absolute best for RCB, scoring 741 runs in 15 innings at an average of 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69 in IPL 2024. Kohli ended the tournament as the highest run-getter and bagged the Orange Cap award. Thus, he played an instrumental role in taking RCB to the playoffs.
