Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh revealed he will give his all to get the best out of the players at Delhi Capitals after he was appointed as assistant and batting coach. Singh will partner with head coach Saurav Ganguly, under whose leadership he shined while playing for India.
Singh has played a key role in guiding young Punjab players like Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh on the right path but this is the first time he will be seen in an official coaching role in the IPL. Yuvraj had earlier performed mentor and brand ambassadors role in the tournament.
Speaking on Delhi Capitals’ official YouTube channel, Yuvraj said: “He (Sourav Ganguly) said, ‘Would you be my assistant?’ And I was like, ‘I’ve been your assistant for the last 25 years, so I’ll probably be doing the same job!’
“I was very happy to do it. I’ve been building myself up over the last three to four years for this opportunity. I have worked with players individually, but being part of the entire team environment will be a different experience, and I’m really excited about it.”
Meanwhile, Yuvraj played for Delhi Capitals (previously Delhi Daredevils) in 2015 after he was roped in for a whopping amount of INR 16 crores, making him the most expensive player in IPL auction history at that time.
Singh had played a key role in taking India to glory in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. The all-rounder scored 362 runs in the 2011 ODI showpiece and also took 15 wickets.
The former talismanic batter revealed he learned how to create a good team environment from Ganguly while playing under his leadership.
“The best thing I learnt from Dada was how to create a good team environment. When he was captain and I made my debut, he kept us together. He made us believe that we could become a great team and win tournaments outside India. He has always been like a big brother to me, whether it was helping me understand selection, mentoring me or showing me what it takes to become a good international cricketer. I’m looking forward to working with him, understanding his insights and sharing mine.”
Yuvraj scored 2750 runs and took 36 wickets in 132 IPL matches.
