Former Indian batter Mohammad Kaif reckons it is high time the world starts talking about Shreyas Iyer’s strengths and not weaknesses. The right-hander is always under scrutiny for his technique against the short ball as he has been troubled by the same.
Iyer scored a match-winning knock of 53 runs off just 37 balls in the final T20I against Australia at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Sunday to help India post 160 runs on the board.
Iyer was added to the T20I squad after three T20Is and delivered in the series’ final game. The Mumbai batter was in prolific form in the recently concluded World Cup as he batted at the top of his game while batting at number four for the home team. After a couple of ordinary knocks in the ODI showpiece, Iyer was able to bounce back into form.
Iyer scored 530 runs in 11 matches of the World Cup at an average of 66.25 and a blistering strike rate of 113.25. The right-hander scored a brilliant knock of 105 runs off just 70 balls in the semifinal clash against New Zealand.
Mohammad Kaif wrote on X, previously Twitter, “Shreyas Iyer has had a phenomenal run recently and it should be appreciated. High time the world starts talking about his strengths and not keep pointing to his weakness.”
Meanwhile, Iyer is added to the two-match Test series squad against South Africa. He is also part of the limited-overs leg against the Proteas and would want to deliver in all three formats of the game.
India will now tour South Africa for three T20Is, as many ODIs, and two Test matches. The first T20I between these two teams will be played at Kingsmead, Durban on 10th December.
