Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has proposed a three-match series for the World Test Championship final in the next cycle. India lost the WTC Final against Australia by a huge margin of 209 runs at the Oval on Sunday. Earlier in the WTC 2021 final, India had lost against New Zealand by eight wickets and then captain Virat Kohli had also suggested the same.
The WTC cycle lasts for two years and the top two teams qualify for the summit clash. Ergo, Rohit Sharma feels it makes sense that ICC should have a best-of-three final rather than only one game to decide the winner.
Meanwhile, India was thoroughly dominated by Australia over the course of five days as the latter came up with a collective effort. Travis Head, Steve Smith, and Scott Boland were brilliant for the Aussies and the trio delivered the goods for the Pat Cummins-led team.
India conceded a huge score of 469 runs after electing to field first and then could only manage 296 runs in their first innings, thus giving a big lead of 173 runs. From there on, they were always chasing the game.
“I would like to play the 3-Test match series for the WTC Final. We worked hard and we fought but we played just 1 game. I think a 3-match series would be ideal in the next WTC cycle,” Rohit Sharma said in the post-match press conference.
On the other hand, ICC is expected to continue with the same model of one-off final in the next cycle of WTC.
Furthermore, it was noticed that India was not well prepared for the English conditions as the players were coming after taking part in the lucrative Indian Premier League and adjusting to the Test format after playing T20 cricket was not easy.
The likes of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, and Virat Kohli failed to deliver the goods with the bat for the Indian team.
India will tour West Indies for two Test matches, three ODIs and five T20Is.
