Former Indian captain Kapil Dev reckons Virat Kohli might regret his decision to retire from Test cricket, as he is currently batting with a lot of authority. Kohli amassed 9230 runs in 123 Test matches at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. In the last 69 Test innings since 2020, Kohli has managed only 2028 runs at an average of 30.72, including just three centuries.
Before 2020, Kohli accumulated 7202 runs in 141 Test innings at an average of 54.97, including 27 centuries. Kohli called time on his Test career in May 2025, which took a lot of experts by surprise.
Meanwhile, Kohli has been in terrific form in the recent past and scored a stunning knock of 139 runs off just 88 balls in the opening ODI against the West Indies on Sunday.
“The way he’s playing, he’s looking good. At this age, his fitness is the most important thing. And if he can keep himself fit for another two, three years, I think he can break all the records. And second, I feel sorry about him. He retired from a Test match. I think, I don’t know why he did that,” Dev was quoted as saying by NDTV Sports.
“He knows best. But as a spectator, as a former cricketer, I feel he should have played more Test cricket also, because he has the ability. Absolutely. Yes, he should not. As somebody who likes his game and can assess the game, he has the ability. I don’t know he’s feeling bad today or not,” he added.
Kohli has been a consistent performer in ODIs, and he recently revealed that he won’t take a U-turn on his Test retirement.
