Former Indian legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar showered praise on the Team India captain Rohit Sharma after he played a scintillating knock of 46 runs off just 20 balls with the help of four fours and as many sixes in the second T20I against Australia.
Rohit looked at his usual best as he timed the ball to perfection and played on the merit of the ball. Gavaskar noticed that Rohit can get into trouble when he looks to hit on the offside but it was measured in his knock in the second T20I at Nagpur on Friday.
India had to chase down 91 runs in eight overs and Rohit played a key role in the team’s win as the hosts were able to level the series.
The talisman was able to hit the ground running as he smashed a monstrous six on the second ball he faced against Josh Hazlewood.
“What you saw with Rohit today was a measured approach. It wasn’t anything where he was looking to defend, but he was being a lot more selective. And look, when he is playing those flick shots or the swivel pull shots, he is very good at that. Where he gets into trouble is where he is looking to play on the off-side, just tonks it up like that, that’s where he hits the ball up in the air rather than into the stands. That’s the only thing that he is going to watch out for,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
“Otherwise, when he is hitting it in his range, he has got absolutely no problems at all. That’s what he should be looking to do. Today was such a measured inning. He was waiting, cutting the ball, pulling, he was not going bang straight away. That is the reason why he batted so brilliantly,” he explained.
In fact, Rohit also surprised himself with the way he timed the ball to perfection against Australia in the all-important game. Dinesh Karthik was able to finish the game as he scored 10 runs off just two balls to help India get over the line.
“I didn’t expect it to go quite as well as that,” Rohit said after collecting the Player of the Match award.
“Glad (Karthik) could finish well. It’s been a while since he had some time in the middle,” he added
