Legendary Chris Gayle hailed Yashasvi Jaiswal for his impressive start to his Test career. The southpaw has scored three centuries in his young career and all three of them have been daddy hundreds, all 150+, including two double centuries.
Jaiswal scored a fine knock of 214 runs in the second innings of the third Test match against England at Rajkot, including 14 fours and 12 sixes, the joint-most in a Test innings along with Wasim Akram and helped India register their biggest Test win of 434 runs.
Jaiswal became only the third Indian, after Vinod Kambli and Virat Kohli, to achieve double hundreds in two consecutive Tests, and the seventh Indian overall to score more than 200 in the second innings. The left-hander has amassed 545 runs in the first three Test matches against England at an average of 109 and a strike rate of 81.10.
“A lot will be expected of him as he goes on but they should just let him continue to flow,” Gayle said in an interview with AFP.
“He’s an attacking player, you see that in his T20 cricket as well…That’s in his nature as well and they shouldn’t try to curb him or try to change him.”
Meanwhile, England opener Ben Duckett came under the scanner for his comments on Jaiswal, stating Bazball deserves credit for the way Jaiswal is batting. However, Gayle said Jaiswal has learnt from his mentor Jwala Singh.
“I don’t think he (Jaiswal) learnt it from England. That style of play he developed with his coach and mentor (Jwala Singh). He’s just phenomenal.
“It’s like the guy has been playing for 20 years, unbelievable. I just hope he can keep it up.”
The left-hander has scored 861 runs in seven Test matches at an average of more than 70.
Meanwhile, at lunch on opening day at Ranchi, England are struggling at 112-5 with debut Akash Deep bagging three wickets.
