India’s head coach Rahul Dravid believes Shubman Gill is on the right track after recent struggles in Test cricket. Gill has scored 1040 runs in 20 Test matches at an average of 30.59 and thus has failed to live up to the lofty expectations.
Gill could only score 74 runs at an average of 18.50 in the two Test matches against South Africa and thus he will look to turn the tables in the upcoming Test series against England. The youngster will bat at number three against the visitors and he will look to deliver the goods for the hosts.
Gill was in terrific form in ODI cricket in 2023 and he will look to replicate the same success in the ongoing season.
“I think Gill is a fine player, who is starting out his journey as a cricketer. I mean, sometimes you forget, it takes people a little bit of time at times and some guys, you know have success instantly. Gill is actually, one of those guys who has done really well, you know, in some of his early days, especially in Australia,” Dravid said in the pre-match press conference.
“To be fair to him and a lot of the young guys coming through, they played on some pretty challenging wickets, whether it’s been in India or even overseas. It’s been some pretty challenging wickets over the last two or three years, so it’s quite hard at times for some of these guys, but he’s doing all the right things.”
” I think he is working really hard. He is, uh you know, he is putting in the time and the effort. In his last season, he got a couple of nice hundreds for us. One in Bangladesh, one in Ahmedabad. So, you know, I think he’s on the right track. Hopefully, on the course of the 5-match series, he has some big performances,” Dravid added.
Gill will aim to make the most of his chances in the five-match Test series. The first Test match between India and England will be played at Hyderabad from January 25 onwards.
