India’s rookie batter Devdutt Padikkal admitted that his maiden Test call-up has come after a tough few years. Padikkal was named in the Test squad after KL Rahul was ruled out of the third match against England at Rajkot.
The 23-year-old has scored 2227 runs in 31 first-class matches at an average of 44.54. The left-hander has been in terrific form in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, scoring 556 runs in four matches at an impressive average of 92.66 and thus he was rewarded by the selectors for his consistent performances.
Padikkal has played two T20Is for India in which he has scored 38 runs and he will look to grab his chance if he gets a chance in the playing XI.
“The call-up is yet to sink in. The Test team is always a dream, and this has come after a tough few years. I feel very proud that all the hard work I’ve put in has paid off. Can’t thank my family and well-wishers enough for sticking by me,” said Padikkal while talking to Times of India.
Meanwhile, Padikkal was ruled out of Vijay Hazare Trophy due to intestinal issue. The southpaw admitted returning from illness was tough for him.
“Returning from the illness was very tough. The biggest challenge was to get physically fit. I had lost 10 kilos and I had to eat right and concentrate on regaining muscle and strength. At this stage of my career every match counts and here I was missing a lot of games,” said Padikkal.
“It was disturbing because there was a lot of competition. While it was challenging, I had to stay focused on doing well when I returned. I worked really hard. I began the season with the determination of winning as many matches as possible for Karnataka,” he added.
Padikkal admitted that each batting position has its own challenges but he is ready to take up any role for the team.
“I enjoy whatever opportunities I get. While each batting position comes with its challenges, I’m up for it because that’s going to help me grow as a cricketer. It’s part of my learning process,” said Padikkal.
The third Test match between India and England will be played at Rajkot from 15th February onwards.
