Indian captain Rohit Sharma was asked in the post-match presentation by renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle regarding the team’s conservative approach in the T20I format, which the side has followed in the last few years.
However, the team was able to turn the page in the series against Sri Lanka. Rohit said in response that it is important to tell players not to worry about their respective place in the team.
The Indian skipper added that one should play freely and even small contributions at the crucial juncture of match can make a big difference. A cameo of 25 runs from 10 balls or an economical over in the fag end of the innings, can be the difference between winning and losing in the shortest format of the game.
Meanwhile, India clinched the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka by 3-0 after beating them by six wickets at Dharamshala on Sunday. This was India’s 12th win in T20Is, which is the joint-most along with Afghanistan among the Test playing nations.
It was another dominating display from the Indian team as they restricted the tourists to 146 runs and then Shreyas Iyer played another match-winning knock to continue his rich form.
Rohit Sharma was delighted with the positives from the series and also with the collective effort of the team.
Rohit said in the post-match presentation, “It’s a pattern of everything that comes together. We played very well. Lot of positives came out from the series. Want to understand what kind of bench strength we have. Good to give opportunities to those guys. Important to tell guys not to worry about your positions in the team. Want to fill whatever gaps we have. Keeping that in mind we want to move forward. Going to be a big challenge but always nice to have guys in form (whom to pick). Once we reach Mohali we’ll start thinking about the Tests”.
India was able to tick the right boxes against Sri Lanka and Rohit was delighted with the collective effort of the team. Team India now has good selection headache as Shreyas Iyer was able to grab his opportunity and it will be tough for the team management to pick a final XI when Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav will get back in the team.
