India’s limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma is likely to be back for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies.
Rohit had missed the South African tour due to a hamstring injury and the team had deeply missed his services in both formats of the game.
Rohit will lead India for the first time in the ODIs after Virat Kohli was sacked as captain as the selectors wanted one captain for white-ball formats. Rohit has now recovered and he is expected to be back in the squad. With two World Cups coming, Rohit will look to guide the team on the right path.
“Rohit is fit and available for the series against the West Indies,” a senior BCCI source told PTI. “By the time, the West Indies series starts, it will be more than seven and half weeks of rehabilitation and recuperation for Rohit.
“He is already training in Mumbai and is expected to be in Bangalore for the fitness test and get a formal okay from the National Cricket Academy,” the source informed.
On the other hand, it has been reported that Rohit Sharma is also all set to be named as the Test captain after Virat Kohli decided to relinquish Test captaincy duties after the series loss against South Africa.
Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya is also set to return to the white-ball team. Pandya was dropped after the T20 World Cup due to his fitness woes as he wasn’t bowling regularly.
“You have to remember after the T20 World Cup, Hardik was dropped and not rested because of his fitness. The selectors wanted to send him a message after his underwhelming show at World T20 but he is too good a player to be kept out for long. “If not against West Indies, then he will surely be back against Sri Lanka,” the source added.
On the other hand, it has been reported that Jasprit Bumrah could be rested for the series against the Windies whereas Ravichandran Ashwin is expected to get one more chance to prove his mettle.
Furthermore, Avesh Khan and Harshal Patel are expected to get their chances in the T20I side after an impressive IPL 2021 season.
