Former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya reckons Indian cricket future is bright with openers like Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Both the youngsters have delivered consistently for the team and have shown the skills to go a long way in their careers.

Sharma had come into the series against Afghanistan with some pressure as he had managed only 11 runs in three games against Zimbabwe.

Meanwhile, Abhishek scored a magnum opus knock of 108 runs off 34 balls, including nine fours and 11 sixes in the final game of the series against Afghanistan. The left-hander reached his century off just 30 balls, which is the fastest for a batter from a Test-playing nation. The southpaw scored his runs at a blistering strike rate of 317.65 as he batted at the top of his game.

Abhishek scored 229 runs in three games of the series at an average of 76.33 and a blistering strike rate of 269.71 against Afghanistan. Thus, the left-hander was awarded Player of the Series.

“He is a player who has established himself in the team. He knows how important his place is and (he is) for the team, what he needs for the team. And he has given his best shot. So, the players individually, if you mention, everyone wants to do well for their country. And so these are the players, young players who are in India, so that’s a good future for India cricket.” Jayasuriya said on the sidelines of the launch of the Corporate World Cup in Gurgaon on Sunday, September 20.

On the other hand, former Sri Lankan opener said Sooryavanshi has a long way to go in his career and he must keep working hard on his game.

“He has a long way to go, and he needs to work hard. And hope he will deliver for India,” the former Sri Lanka head coach mentioned.

Sharma and Sooryavanshi will be seen in action in the upcoming Asian Games.
