Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar reckons Rajasthan Royals should back Yashasvi Jaiswal as they had retained him before IPL 2022 mega auction.
The inaugural champions had also retained Jos Buttler and captain Sanju Samson along with the youngster.
But, as Jaiswal could not deliver the goods in the first few matches, he was dropped from the playing XI. However, the left-hander from Mumbai, bounced back in style as he scored 68 runs off just 41 balls against Punjab Kings in the previous match. Thus, he was awarded the Player of the Match.
Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson, and Shimron Hetmyer have delivered the goods for Rajasthan Royals but it is also important for young batters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal to contribute to the team’s success.
However, Manjrekar is a bit worried about Devdutt Padikkal’s form as he has been pushed down in the middle order.
Manjrekar told ESPN Cricinfo: “Yes, I think so because he was one of the guys they retained and he’s come back into form. But I worry for Padikkal down the order, whether that will stifle the growth of the young talent.”
Meanwhile, Manjrekar backed Jimmy Neesham to replace Shimron Hetmyer, who returned back to the Caribbean for the birth of his child. Neesham can also contribute with the ball for Rajasthan Royals.
“I think you want a finisher. So, Daryl Mitchell has been tried and looked out of his depth. Jimmy Neesham has had only one chance. I would go with Neesham.”
On the other hand, Manjrekar believes Delhi Capitals might have to re-think Anrich Nortje’s selection if the South African continues his indifferent form. Manjrekar added that Mustafizur Rahman had done a decent job for the team.
“They might want to re-think Anrich Nortje if his form doesn’t come back. I thought Mustafizur did really well for them, barring maybe a couple of spells.”
RR and DC will face each other on Wednesday.
