IPL 2022: I may not have MS Dhoni’s physique but I can make most of powerplay overs – Wriddhiman Saha

Gujarat Titans wicket-keeper batter Wriddhiman Saha is relishing the role of opener while playing in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League. Saha had to wait for his chances as the franchise first gave opportunities to Matthew Wade.

However, as the Australian gloveman could not deliver the goods at the top of the order, Saha was included in the final XI. The Bengal cricketer has made the most of his chances and has grown in confidence.

Saha has scored 154 runs in five matches at an average of 30.80 and a strike rate of 128.33. Thus, he has done a decent job for the Hardik Pandya-led team.

Saha’s best knock of the tournament came against his former team Sunrisers Hyderabad. The right-hander scored 68 runs off just 38 balls against the Orange Army and helped his team in chasing down a stiff target of 196 runs.

Saha said that he may not have a physique like MS Dhoni, Chris Gayle, and Andre Russell but he can make good use of the PowerPlay overs when only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

“Don’t know why some people say I’m not a shorter-format player. But on my part, I’ve always liked to play shorter formats since my early years. I may not be having the physique of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Andre Russell or Chris Gayle. But the potential I have, I can make use of the Powerplay with my fearless attitude. And I’ve done that,” Saha said during a select media interaction.

On the other hand, Saha, who was recently involved in a controversy with journalist Boria Majumdar, added he doesn’t want to prove anything to anyone.

“It’s not about answering anyone. I just played for my team’s cause as we had to chase down almost 200 (196) in that game. I could contribute to a solid start which my team needed then. That’s what matters ultimately. I don’t play to show or prove anything to anyone. Not sure if that knock is a turnaround or so, but yes, it has been a boost to my intensity, which I did feel in the matches thereafter,” added Saha.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans have been outstanding throughout the season as they have registered eight wins from 10 matches. GT will next take on Mumbai Indians on Friday.
