IPL 2022: We didn’t bowl according to the plans – Rohit Sharma after loss against Delhi Capitals

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma admitted that they didn’t bowl according to the plans after losing their first match of the ongoing season against Delhi Capitals by four wickets at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on Sunday.

The five-time champions posted a par score of 177 runs after Rishabh Pant won the toss and decided to bowl first.

Ishan Kishan, who was bought for a whopping amount of INR 15.25 Crores in the auction, scored an unbeaten knock of 81 runs off 48 balls with the help of 11 fours and two sixes.

Rohit Sharma also contributed 41 runs at the top of the order as MI got off to a good start after the openers added 67 runs. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals was under the cosh as they were 72-5 and were reeling in the run-chase. However, Shardul Thakur, Lalit Yadav, and Axar Patel played fine knocks to get their team over the line.

Thakur led DC’s comeback in the match as he played a fine cameo of 11-ball 22 whereas Lalit Yadav scored an unbeaten knock of 48 runs. Furthermore, Axar Patel played a blistering knock of 38 runs off just 17 balls.

Meanwhile, Daniel Sams didn’t have the best of debuts for MI as he conceded 57 runs in his quota of four overs. The Australian was taken for 24 runs in the 18th over of the innings, which turned the match in Delhi Capitals’ favor.

Furthermore, Mumbai Indians lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah had an off outing as he gave away 43 runs in 3.2 overs he bowled.

Rohit Sharma said in the post-match presentation, “I thought it was a good score. It didn’t look like a pitch where you can get 170+ at the start but we played in the middle and finished well. Just didn’t bowl according to our plans. Never been the talk (of badly wanting to win the first game). We always come prepared whether it’s the first game or last game. We want to win every game. Things didn’t go according to plan but that can happen. Just need to stay close as a group and take the learnings. Disappointed with the loss but not the end.”

In fact, Mumbai Indians haven’t won their opening match of the season since 2012 and the trend continued in this season as well. Mumbai Indians will play their next match of the season against Rajasthan Royals at the DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday.
