Delhi Capitals’ wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant is likely to continue as the team’s captain for the rest of the season ahead of Shreyas Iyer, according to sources, as reported by Sportskeeda.
Pant can be given the chance to continue as the leader of the team as the franchise wants Shreyas Iyer to take more time as he is coming back from an injury.
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the IPL 2021 due to shoulder injury, which he suffered before the tournament against England in the limited overs series. However, as the IPL 2021 was postponed to September due to Covid-19 cases in the bubble in India, Iyer got a chance to fully recover and he will take part in the second phase of the tournament.
Rishabh Pant has led with aplomb in the first phase of the IPL as the team had won six out of their eight matches. Thus, Delhi Capitals were placed at the second place in the points table before the tournament was deferred by the Indian board.
“While it is great news that Shreyas Iyer is fit again and ready to get back to action, it is understood that the DC management wants to give him more time to recover. As a result, Pant will continue as captain, but only for the second half of IPL 2021.”
On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has started to train with the team in the UAE and he stated that he is feeling amazing.
He told Sports Today, “Currently, I am feeling amazing, the journey was awesome, to be honest. I never hesitated for a while but right after the injury, I was sulking a bit and I didn’t know exactly what to do. I went into the dressing room and cried and it took me a while to digest it but yeah, at the end of the day, you need to go through all of it.”
“It’s a setback and you just have to push and come back strong. When I realized, I had to go under the knife, it was pretty hard to digest. The way I was training prior to the injury, I was at the highest level, at the peak and suddenly this freak injury happened,” he added.
Rishabh Pant will look to continue the good show if he is retained as the captain of the team. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has played a key role in the renaissance of Delhi Capitals. Iyer led the team to the playoff stages in 2019, which the team managed after a long gap of six years and then took his side to the final of the previous season but they could not cross the final hurdle against Mumbai Indians.
