Chennai Super Kings captain Ravindra Jadeja still had hope when 17 runs were needed off the last over against Mumbai Indians at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai on Thursday. The reason behind Jadeja’s hope was the fact that MS Dhoni was still unbeaten.
However, Chennai didn’t get off to a great start in the final over as they lost Dwaine Pretorius on the first ball. Subsequently, Dwayne Bravo could only manage a single on the second delivery, which gave the strike to MS Dhoni.
Dhoni then smashed a six straight over long-off, got a boundary over the wicket-keeper’s head, got a double on the penultimate ball, and then finished the game with a four to help his team to thrilling three wickets win.
Dhoni has finished such matches on numerous occasions and it was no different for him on Thursday. There is no doubt that Dhoni is not at the peak of his prowess in the last couple of years but he once again showed why he still has some fuel left in his tank. Jaydev Unadkat was put under pressure by the veteran when the left-hander conceded a six on the third ball of the final over.
It was an insane finish to the game and Dhoni single-handedly took his team home and to crucial two points.
Ravindra Jadeja was delighted after MS Dhoni once again showed his class and finished the game in style.
Jadeja said in the post-match presentation, “We were very tense the way the game was going. But the great finisher of the game was still there, so we knew we had a chance. He’s still here and doing it for us. Yes, he (Mukesh) has bowled well up front and done well for us in the powerplay. If you aren’t winning games, you still want to be calm. (On him dropping catches) It happens, that’s why I never take fielding for granted and practice hard. We need to work on our fielding, can’t afford to drop catches.”
Chennai Super Kings will look to build on the winning impetus from here. CSK will next take on Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Monday.
