Delhi Capitals skipper David Warner admitted the target of 168 runs against Chennai Super Kings was a gettable score but they threw wickets away, which led to their downfall in their 27-run loss at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Wednesday. DC bowlers did a good job in restricting the home team to a sub-par score of 167 runs after MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first.
In fact, none of the CSK batters could go past the 25-run mark with only Shivam Dube scoring 25 from 12 balls. Mitchell Marsh was the pick of the bowlers for DC as he returned with impressive figures of 3-18 in the three overs he bowled.
Furthermore, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav continued their good show for DC and got the best out of the turning pitch. The spin duo collectively conceded 55 runs in the eight overs they bowled and scalped a total of three wickets.
On the other hand, DC got off to a horrid start as their captain David Warner was dismissed without troubling the scorers. Subsequently, Phillip Salt and Mitchell Marsh were dismissed cheaply to leave the tourists in tatters at 25-3.
Manish Pandey and Rilee Rossouw added 59 runs for the fourth wicket but both of them scored their runs at less than run-a-ball and thus the required run rate kept soaring high.
David Warner said in the post-match presentation, “Back to losing three wickets. We lost a wicket in the first over. Our opening combination is crucial. We lost a wicket to a run-out. We threw wickets away. Put too much on pressure on ourselves. Was a gettable total.”
He added, “To sum it up, we needed a better first six. We couldn’t rotate strike. We needed to try different things but we couldn’t. When you get a wide half-tracker you can’t hit it to cover. We should have executed better with those wide half-trackers.”
Delhi Capitals will next take on Punjab Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Saturday.
