Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri feels Mumbai Indians’ victory against Delhi Capitals will do Rohit Sharma a world of good. MI had lost their opening two matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings and thus it was a much-needed win against Delhi Capitals for the five-time champions.
Rohit Sharma led from the front in their six-wicket win as he scored a fine knock of 65 runs from 45 balls with the help of six fours and four sixes. The flamboyant batter scored an IPL fifty after a long gap of 24 innings.
MI was able to restrict DC to 172 and then Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma played crucial knocks.
“He soaked the pressure because that’s what the senior players can do. They have been in those situations before; they have the experience and that’s why he said it in the last game that it’s important to step up to the party. He led from the front and it will do him a world of good, captaining the side as the tournament progresses,” Shastri was quoted as saying on Star Sports.
Shastri added that MI has a good chance of carrying the winning impetus in the upcoming matches after a crucial win against DC.
“We have known with Mumbai Indians in the past that once they get off to a start, they can win two to three games on the bounce. So, it’s an important game to win and the fact they won in this fashion, handling the pressure in those final overs should stand them in good stead,” he added.
MI have been slow starters in the last few seasons but they are always a force to reckon with once they get on a roll. Furthermore, Piyush Chawla also played a key role in the team’s win as he returned with impressive figures of 3-20. Chawla dismissed Rovman Powell, Manish Pandey, and Lalit Yadav.
Mumbai Indians will play their next match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
